Is Personal Data Really Private?Nearly everything you do online—from theWeb sites you visit to the Facebook pagesyou “like”—is being tracked by a business.Advertisers want to know about your activitiesso they can show you appropriate online ads; retailers wantto know what you buy so they can send you targeted e-mailsand catalogs. But are your personal details really private?Although privacy policies are supposed to explain whichdetails each Web site collects and who will have access toyour private data, these policies may not tell the wholestory. After Facebook changed its privacy policy and thenreset users’ privacy controls on its own, the Federal TradeCommission charged the firm with making “deceptiveprivacy claims.” Users believed their personal details wereprivate, yet advertisers and others were allowed access.Now, in a settlement with the FTC, Facebook has tightenedits privacy controls, and its privacy program must bemonitored for the next 20 years to ensure compliance. TheFTC also thinks Internet users should be able to opt outof online tracking if they choose. Increasingly, consumer education is becoming a part of high school and college curricula and adult-education programs. Theseprograms cover many topics—for instance, what major factors should be consideredwhen buying specific products, such as insurance, real estate, automobiles, appliances and furniture, clothes, and food; the provisions of certain consumer-protectionlaws; and the sources of information that can help individuals become knowledgeableconsumers.Major advances in consumerism have come through federal legislation.
