T MAY be hard to imagine, but even

T MAY be hard to imagine, but even a glamorous personality like Sofia Jane does her share of running errands like any other mother.

A typical day for the 33-year-old, stay-at-home mother sees her sending her children to school, shopping for groceries and tackling her daughter’s homework in the evenings. In between, she finds time to go kickboxing to keep in shape and meets other mums for tea.

Sofia and her angels: Arissa (top), Khadija, (right) and Soraya.

“Sometimes people take it for granted that mothers who stay at home have an easy life. That’s not true. It’s an exhausting job,” Sofia says. But this is one role that the actress will not trade for anything. Talk to her about her children, and she becomes animated.

Sofia has three daughters, Arissa, 9, Khadija, 5, and Soraya, 18 months.

“I imagine that if at 33, I didn’t have my husband and my kids, I’d be a lonely person. With strength and love, I hope to be able to equip them in the right way so that my children will turn out to be beautiful and loving,” she says.

Sofia, who made her debut in Mira Edora when she was just 18, faded into the background at the height of her popularity to concentrate on family life after she married her businessman husband, 42-year-old Meor Azman.

“It was natural for me to put my family first. I want to be there for them, and I cannot do that if I am not at home,” she says.

This does not mean that Sofia has retired from acting completely. There has been a hiatus after films like Perempuan, Isteri dan ? and Sayang Salmah in 1995, but off and on, she has made her presence felt. Just last year, she played Tun Teja in Puteri Gunung Ledang and now she has just finished the first season on her talk show, 123.

Whenever she works, Sofia tries to include her children by bringing them to the set.

“I feel that it’s good for them to see what I do. As they are very young, they don’t understand why I have to leave the house and go to work,” she says.

Her daughter Arissa, a chatty and confident nine-year-old who is a dead ringer for her mother, is a natural in front of the camera. But Sofia is not ready to let her go into showbiz just yet.

“I know I started acting early but not at nine! I think that they should have a childhood first,” she says.

“My husband and I try our best to make sure they have all the good fundamentals.’’

Sofia says she used to refer to the books for parenting guidelines, but three children later, she has wised up to the fact that each child is unique. She now thinks that mothers should follow their instincts when it comes to bringing up children.

“I took a lot from my mother who was a full-time housewife. She was always there.

“She was able to attend to all the family’s needs with such ease because she had so much love for us. This is one thing I will never forget about while growing up,” says Sofia, who describes her childhood as joy-filled and carefree.

She believes children today do not have it so easy.

“I could go to the shops to run errands when I was 10. My mother didn’t have to worry as we were living in a safe place. Now, the world has become a dangerous place for children. I would not allow them to roam in the park or hang out in the bookshop alone like I did because I fear for their safety.”

For this coming Mother’s Day, Sofia says she expects her nine-year-old will give her a card. She and her family will likely spend the day with grandmother Noreen Abdullah, who’s in her 70s. Mother and daughter have a close relationship and see each other at least three times a week.

“I cherish my mum everyday, not just on Mother’s Day.

“I know for my mum that being able to see her grandchildren and for us to spend time with her are the things that she really appreciates, not buying her perfume and all those things,” she says.
