Intergenerational Contacts“The continuity of all cultures depends on the living presence of at least three generations" (Mead, 1970, p. 3). In our culture, it is not easy for three generations to share one another's living presence. Older people are often separated from the young by physical and social distance. Rather than developing informal relations in the familyg at church, or in the neighborhood, the ages may remain separate from one another. Thus, the connections between the young and the old are broken, and their natural ways of interacting and relating are no longer available. Recognizing this problem, many educators are promoting intergenerational programs in school and nonschool settings to provide a space for the living presence of at least three generations, ln these intergenerational programs, children, adults, and elders interact with one another, reestablishing the relationships of caring and continuity of life.
