Several factors (as highlighted by the International Education Journal) have attracted leading foreign universities to enter into partnerships with the universities in Singapore:

English as a major communication language
Education that inspires independent, creative and critical thinking
Excellent opportunities for exchange studies
World-class tertiary institutions that have high-tech R&D facilities

By 2011, 31 foreign universities were in collaboration with local universities in Singapore. Today, these universities have tie-ups with leading global institutes such as Yale, Cornell, and Duke, to name a few.

Medicine and Healthcare

Singapore has a reputation for having one of the best medical and life sciences educational facilities. Two out of Singapore’s six universities made it to QS’ list of the ‘Top 50 universities in Asia for life sciences & medicine’. NUS is the 2nd-best medical university in all of Asia, while NTU is among the Top 20.

In 2000, NUS partnered with Duke University (one of the Times Top 10 medical/health universities in the world) to form the Duke-NUS Medical School. This medical school is aimed at developing biomedical science in Asia and offers MD, PhD and combined MD/PhD programmes.

“Duke-NUS brings together a large health enterprise (40% of Singapore’s public healthcare delivery by SingHealth) and a very powerful biomedical university, making many important scientific and biomedical discoveries together,” says Senior Vice-Dean of Duke-NUS Medical School, Prof. Soo Khee-Chee, about the partnership.

The Lee Kong Chian (LKC) School of Medicine, a joint venture between NTU and Imperial College, London, is another major tie-up in this field. LKC courses are oriented towards medicine and healthcare.
