The person-centered group approach

The person-centered group approach emphasizes certain attitudes and skills
as a necessary part of the facilitator’s style: listening in an active and sensitive
way, accepting, understanding, respecting, refl ecting, clarifying, summarizing,
sharing personal experiences, responding, encountering and engaging others in
the group, going with the fl ow of the group rather than trying to direct the way
the group is going, and affi rming a member’s capacity for self-determination.
Other relational qualities and attitudes embraced by person-centered therapists
include receptivity to experience, contact and engagement, a therapeutic alliance,
authentic dialogue, understanding the client’s experience, and hopefulness
regarding the client’s capacity for the relationship (Cain, 2008, 2010). The
facilitator encourages members to explore the incongruities between their beliefs
and behaviors and to move toward the inclinations of their inner feelings
and subjective experiencing. As the members become more aware of these
incongruities within themselves, their view of themselves expands.
Similar to his belief in the actualizing tendency within individuals, Rogers
(1970) had faith in the capacity of a group to move on its own initiative. However,
he acknowledged that anxiety and irritation among group members may
result from the lack of a clear and shared structure, especially during the early
phase of a group. He believed it was important for the group to determine for
themselves how they would spend their time, and he might open a session by
saying, “I wonder how you might like to spend the time in the group today?”
Or he might say, “Welcome. We have set aside (a certain amount of) time today
to meet in the group. I’m not sure what we will end up talking or thinking
