JAKARTA — Hundreds of passengers were stranded overnight at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport as five flights of low-cost carrier Lion Air were delayed due to operational issues for more than 12 hours on Sunday evening (July 31)

Flights were delayed overnight for passengers of Lion Air’s JT 650 to Lombok International Airport in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara; JT 630 to Fatmawati Soekarno Airport in Bengkulu; JT 590 and JT 582 to Juanda Airport in Surabaya, East Java; and JT 526 to Syamsuddin Noor Airport in Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan.

Initially, Lion Air officers at Soekarno-Hatta Airport told the passengers that delays were caused by bad weather.

As time passed on, passengers grew impatient and blocked the runway of terminal 1A at Soekarno Hatta Airport, but the airport authorities managed to persuade passengers to return inside the terminal for safety reasons.

Mr Edward Sirait, president director of Lion Air, explained in a written statement on Monday morning that the main cause of delays were due to difficulties in managing the crew’s roster. Once this was resolved, the destination airports were closed for operations leaving the airline little choice but to reschedule the flights to the next day.

“We were resolving issues with the crew roster and finding replacement crew which caused a delay. However, once we were able to find replacement crew, the destination airports operating hours were limited so we needed to reschedule flights to (Monday) morning,” Mr Sirait said adding that all five delayed flights have now departed from Soekarno-Hatta Airport.

He said that the airline provided compensation to passengers whose flights were delayed.

“We apologise for this inconvenience and we are trying to make sure (Monday’s) flights run normally,” Mr Sirait said.

Earlier this year, the airline also triggered a terminal mix-up fiasco at Soekarno-Hatta Airport when its ground handling staff took 182 passengers arriving on a flight from Singapore on May 10 to the airport’s domestic arrivals terminal instead of the international arrivals.

The Transportation Ministry issued a five-day suspension to Lion Air’s ground handling activities but the sanction was revoked several days before it was slated to be implemented. JAKARTA GLOBE
