Almanacs Almanacs are collections of facts, statistics, and lists gathered together in a convenient format for easy reference. They are filled with up-to-date answers to all kinds of questions. The print version is generally updated annually and may contain a “year in review” summary. Two print examples of standard almanacs are The World Almanac and Books of Factsand the Time Almanac. The online version of the latter is the Information Please Almanac, part of the InfopleaseWeb site. General almanacs provide a snapshot of what the world or country was like in a given year, including summaries of major events, names of people in power, things that were prominent in the arts, and statistical information. Some almanacs are focused on a given field and will provide a glimpse of the state of the world in regard to that particular topic, as well as show trends in that area. They are a significant source for statistical information and often contain citations for their sources of information. Additionally, they can be utilized for biographical or directory information. Whether one is looking for specific dates, facts, statistics, measures, or information on topics such as state funding of welfare programs or recent winners of the Davis Cup, one can likely find the information in an almanac, along with charts, figures, and tables. Many times, the almanac can be the first source to consult, and then, after further reassessment of the query, one may need to consult other sources. Almanacs are available in print and online. Many excellent online almanacs require no subscription fees, such as the Information Please Almanac. Although online almanacs can be more up-to-date than the print versions, the disadvantages may include a confusing interface, poor search options, and annoying advertisements. Additionally, when finding quick factual information, many times, it is faster to grab the print almanac behind the reference desk and flip to the chart or page (assuming there is a good index) than it is to go online, find the resource, and navigate through it to find that piece of information.
