In today's globally competitive marketplace, time has become the vital factor to effectively manage inventories, as witnessed by the development of JIT and kanban systems, in order to guarantee world-class service to customers. The standards for time measurement today are hours, days, and weeks, not months, quarters, and years as in past decades. As material management professionals, the question we are now asking ourselves is: How much inventory do we need to satisfy customer demand for reduced cycle time while avoiding the pitfalls of creating excess and obsolete inventory? To help us find the answer to this question at Rosemount Analytical we have developed an additional set of tools to be used in conjunction with our formal material planning system.
