A traveling businesswoman asked a reference librarian in a public library for city maps. She had client addresses and wanted to make her hotel reserva- tions nearby. The librarian’s first response was to refer to the current general atlases, but none of them provided maps detailed enough for such a query. A quick check of the current Rand McNally Road Atlas was more useful for major cities, but the businesswoman requested more detail. The librarian then turned to an online resource, Bing Maps. She was able to quickly search the city maps for Boston, Massachusetts, and Washington, D.C. Not only was she able to identify the location of each address, but she could also show an aerial pho- tograph and provided the woman with an oblique bird’s-eye view so that she could almost walk around the building.
