The impact of strip mining on sedimentation has been studied in Kentucky (collier et all., 1970). Strip coal mining in the Beaver Creek Basin began in 1955 and ceased in 1959. The two=and-a-half-year study centered on an area of 180 hectares, comparing two reaches of the river, one in the stripped area which covered 18 hectares, the other in the unstrapped one, both reaches having the same hydrographic geometry. Maximum sediment load during stroms was 30.000 ppm in the disturbed area and 553 ppm in the understurbed one.Annual yield was 733 and 9,6 tons/km², respectively. The influence of the stripping and mining operations is thus clearly demonstrated.
