The theory of information literacy and information literacy instruction is increasingly impacted by research studies that employ ethnographic and phenomenographical approaches to investigating individuals’ experiences of information literacy and successes with information literacy. Christine Bruce’s The Seven Faces of Information Literacy19 was the first widely considered work in this area, but other studies have followed as well. 20 In keeping with these new understandings of information literacy, librarians are increasingly designing instruction within a broad framework of learner engagement in the development of information literacy as an attribute 21 or “way of life.”
