Estimations of age and growth
The sagittal otoliths were removed from the eels
collected from the lakes and the Ima River and were
aged by the burning and cracking method (Christensen
1968; Vøllestad et al. 1988). This method was first
described by Christensen (1968) and has then been
frequently used in ageing studies of eels (Todd 1980;
Hu & Todd 1981; Moriarty 1983). However, this
method appears to be difficult to use for ageing some
eels because of the presence of false checks (e.g.,
Graynoth 1999; Pease et al. 2003). Previous to this
analysis, we had confirmed ages estimated from this
method by matching the ages from the otolith section
ageing method (as described by Tsukamoto & Arai
2001) on some otolith pairs from the same individuals.
In the burning and cracking method, the otolith
extracted from an eel is pressed to be cracked into
otolith fragments. They are then placed on the blade of
a heavy scalpel that is then held in a burner (GB-2001;
PRINCE, Tokyo, Japan) for 10–20 s. After burning,
