2017 Range Rover Sport gets 2.0L twin-turbo Ingenium diesel entry-level variant, new tech and infotainment
Land Rover has rolled out the 2017 Range Rover Sport, which the company says is its most efficient ever. The latest RR Sport features a new Ingenium powertrain, upgraded infotainment system with connectivity and WiFi capability, new driver aids and greater scope for personalisation.
The new engine is the smallest ever to power the Range Rover Sport. Already available on the Range Rover Evoque and Land Rover Discovery Sport, the 2.0 litre SD4 Ingenium diesel engine is an all-aluminium unit pushing out 240 hp and 500 Nm of torque. The new SD4 HSE replaces the 3.0 litre SDV6 as the entry-level variant and is capable of 0-96 km/h (0-60 mph) in 8.0 seconds, which isn’t too shabby.
The introduction of a second turbocharger to the Ingenium engine has been significant in retaining the power and strong torque needed for the Range Rover Sport. It is the first Jaguar Land Rover-built unit to feature series sequential turbo technology. RR Sports with this motor are distinguished by a single twin-exhaust, as opposed to a single pipe on each side of the rear bumper.
Elsewhere in the range, JLR’s new 3.0 litre V6 supercharged petrol engine features lightweight all-aluminium construction, direct-injection and variable intake, and exhaust valve timing. A single balancer shaft enhances smooth-running and refinement befitting the Range Rover badge, Land Rover says. This motor makes 340 hp and 450 Nm, and is good for 0-96 km/h (0-60 mph) in 7.1 seconds. This V6 is the entry petrol variant that sits below the 5.0L V8.
Engines aside, the 2017 MY RRS features a range of semi-autonomous driving tech. Advanced Tow Assist, Blind Spot Assist and Intelligent Speed Limiter work alongside existing features to elevate the level of driver aids. Advanced Tow Assist is a first-in-class feature utilising the existing camera system and central touchscreen, allowing the driver to indicate the desired direction of their trailer using the Terrain Response 2 rotary controller. The vehicle will then auto steer accordingly.
All-terrain capability is a Range Rover USP, and the new Sport includes the new Low Traction Launch, while the updated 4x4i menu presents all the necessary vehicle info when tackling challenging terrain. The 2017 RR Sport also comes with Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB).
The enlarged dual-view touchscreen features a new 10-inch display (two inches wider than before, no more hard keys) with tablet-style pinch and zoom orientation. This is powered by Land Rover’s InControl Touch Pro tech. The new Pro Services system allows customers to download apps and install them directly to the vehicle’s system, rather than being used through their smartphone. InControl Remote Premium allows drivers to control a number of vehicle functions remotely via a smartphone app.
No changes to the big SUV’s appearance, but there’s a new Bright Pack as an option on Autobiography Dynamic models. It brings a more vivid finish, with features such as Atlas Silver front grille mesh and bonnet mesh. There’s also an extended palette of colour options and finishes, with 19 new colours from JLR’s Special Vehicle Operations division.
