[Salinan]Disalin!
At this point, it is important to bring the discussion back to the issue of social identity and how participants work toestablish and construct their respective identities in interaction with each other. At issue here in these data is thelegitimatization of Arab Israeli group identity. It is particularly important to examine this context because it is here, in faceto-face interaction with the group in power, that identities are constructed. Given the fact that, in the larger context, the ArabIsraeli group is the non-legitimized minority, the results of the analysis are particularly poignant. We will, below, take thepattern of silence, and show how it reflects the construction of social identity, and the importance of this issue to the ArabIsraeli group.Silence may be considered a form of control (and is by some), and the JIs, in the interaction, feed right into the AI’s controlby talking more, repairing more, and using ‘extreme case formulation’ to address their recipients’ skepticism.
