The lensed ferrule endface is more

The lensed ferrule endface is more commonly known as the as the expanded beam. This endface is not a new concept; it has been in use for over three decades. However, until recently it was not very well known.

Unlike the other geometries that have been discussed, the lensed geometry literally has a lens at the end of the ferrule, as shown in Figure 26.15. One of two different lens types can be used: the collimating lens and the imaging lens. Most expanded beam connectors feature the collimating lens.

When the light traveling through the optical fiber enters the transmit lens, it is expanded and collimated, as shown in Figure 26.16. The collimated light travels through the air gap between the two lenses and enters the receive lens. The receive lens collects the collimated light and focuses it to the point where it is within the cone of acceptance of the receiving optical fiber, as you can see in Figure 26.16
