There have recently been California
There have recently been California grape shipments held at the port of Surabaya in Indonesia due to confusion over the status of the fruit fly Anastrepha fraterculus and the fruit fly-free status for California grapes in Indonesia. A meeting was held yesterday in Indonesia to review the situation and in discussion with Indonesian quarantine officials, USDA in Jakarta was able to secure approval to release the held loads. It is not known how long it will take for the loads to be released.
The Indonesia government requires a letter from USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA-APHIS) stating that California has been free of Ceratitis capitata and Anastrepha fraterculus for three years before further consignments arrive. USDA-APHIS will be providing the letter. According to USDA in Jakarta, future consignments must arrive with a phytosanitary certificate (phyto) with an additional declaration (AD) stating that the grapes came from a production area that is free of Ceratitis capitata and Anastrepha fraterculus. USDA in Jakarta will clarify the timeline for this as there are shipments on the water that may be impacted.
USDA-APHIS will now be working to update the database regarding phytosanitary certification accordingly so that the counties are able to provide the revised AD on new phytos and can issue superseded phytos for fruit on the water.
Should there be changes to the agreement reached between the two governments, details will be provided.
