Operations Research deals with systems, applying the same scien¬tific techniques which have unlocked the atom, discovered DNA and sent astronauts soaring out into space to business and manufacturing systems.
Operations Research got its start during World War II when the Royal Air Force of Britain was vastly outnumbered by the Luftwaffe of Nazi Germany. Through the techniques of Operations Research, or Operational Research as the British call it, coupled with the new and secret radar, the effectiveness of each Spitfire was increased by a factor of 30.
In other words, each British plane became as effective as if it were 30 planes. Thus Operations Research played a big part in victory in the Battle of Britain.
Today, Weyerhaeuser has an Operations Research department, which is using these new techniques to study our company systems.
The results of these studies have brought and will bring still more innovations to Weyerhaeuser. The discipline of Operations Research is an innovation in itself. As Machiavelli said, the risks are great. And as he didn't say, the rewards to the company can be equally as great.
