Manyairlines don’t include gender, middle name, or dateof birth in their reservations records, which increasesthe likelihood of false matches. One way to improve screening and help reducethe number of people erroneously marked foradditional investigation would be to use a moresophisticated system involving more personal dataabout individuals on the list. The TSA is developingjust such a system, called “Secure Flight,” but it hasbeen continually delayed due to privacy concernsregarding the sensitivity and safety of the data itwould collect. Other similar surveillance programsand watch lists, such as the NSA’s attempts to gatherinformation about suspected terrorists, have drawncriticism for potential privacy violations.Additionally, the watch list has drawn criticismbecause of its potential to promote racial profilingand discrimination. Some allege that they wereincluded by virtue of their race and ethnic descent,such as David Fathi, an attorney for the ACLU ofIranian descent, and Asif Iqbal, a U.S. citizen ofPakistani decent with the same name as aGuantanamo detainee.
