Newton looked for a middle ground in his philosophy of science betweenconclusive proof or demonstration and mere conjecture. Demonstration, which may philosophers and scientists thought science ought to provide, isproof from self-evident first principles. Nice work if you can get it, butNewton realised that the role of observation and experiment rules it out.At the same time, he did not want a science that consisted of wildconjectures of merely plausible hypotheses. He sought a middle position, where although science does not generate the sort of proof puremathematicians can provide, it is much more than guesswork. Newtonclaimed that somehow the data, could be generalised to a theory thatdeserves high confidence even if it remained forever unprovable.
