Connection performance describes the performance of an interconnection. In this section, we are going to examine the factors that affect the performance of an interconnection. This interconnection may consist of two connectors and a mating sleeve or a connector and a receptacle.
Connection performance is dependent on several factors, including intrinsic factors, extrinsic factors, geometry, endface finish, and cleanliness. Intrinsic factors, extrinsic factors, and cleanliness apply to the connector, mating sleeve, and the receptacle. Endface finish and geometry apply only to the connector. Endface finish and the cleaning of the connector endface are discussed at the end of the chapter after connector assembly. Cleaning and inspection of the mating sleeve and receptacle is discussed in detail in Chapter 34, “Troubleshooting and Restoration.”
