An elementary illustration of its generation is given in Fig. 7.10. We first assumethat the tidal flow through section Ain the deep water is the same as that throughsection Bin the shallow water, and that far away from the shelf edge the currents are the same from top to bottom – that is, the currents are barotropic. Onthe flood tide, when the water is streaming onto the continental shelf, there mustbe more water passing through the upper layer in section Bthan through the upperlayer in section A. This condition occurs because the layer is the same thicknessin each location and the water through section Bis going faster than through A.In the lower layer there is more water passing through section Athan throughB. The deficiency in the upper layer coupled with the surplus in the lower layercauses the interface between the two to rise in the vicinity of the shelf break. Onthe ebb flow the opposite occurs and the interface between the layers is forceddown, as indicated in Fig. 7.10( b).
