The type of this research was classroom action research. The research was chosen because it provides a method that can be done by the researcher and the teacher to improve the practice of education by studying issues of problem they face, especially in reading. The researcher in this study focused on improving students‟ reading skill by using the mind mapping. The researcher invited the Englishand the students of XI IPA 1 in SMA N 1 Kretek to work collaborativelly.
There are several concepts of a classroom action research. The researcher chose one of them which is from Kemmis and McTaggart. The process is presented below.

The steps of action research according to Kemmis and McTaggart (1988) are planning a change, acting and observing the process and consequences of the change, reflecting on these processes and consequences, replanning, acting and obseving again, and then reflecting again. Those steps were done to find out the most appropriate actions to improve the students‟ reading skill of class XI IPA 1 at SMA N 1 Kretek in the academic year of 2012/2013.

Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian tindakan kelas. Penelitian ini dipilih karena menyediakan metode yang bisa dilakukan oleh peneliti dan guru untuk meningkatkan praktik pendidikan dengan mempelajari isu-isu masalah yang mereka hadapi, terutama dalam membaca. Peneliti dalam penelitian ini difokuskan pada peningkatan siswa "keterampilan membaca dengan menggunakan mind mapping. Peneliti mengundang Englishand siswa XI IPA 1 di SMA N 1 Kretek bekerja collaborativelly.
Ada beberapa konsep dari penelitian tindakan kelas. Peneliti memilih salah satu dari mereka yang dari Kemmis dan McTaggart. Proses ini disajikan di bawah ini.

Langkah-langkah penelitian tindakan menurut Kemmis dan McTaggart (1988) berencana perubahan, bertindak dan mengamati proses dan konsekuensi dari perubahan , merenungkan proses ini dan konsekuensinya, replanning, bertindak dan obseving lagi, dan kemudian mencerminkan lagi. Langkah-langkah yang dilakukan untuk mengetahui tindakan yang paling tepat untuk meningkatkan siswa "keterampilan membaca kelas XI IPA 1 SMA N 1 Kretek pada tahun akademik 2012/2013.
