New grand Interpretations: the cyclical paternGiambatista Vico: God and the cultural cycle. When in the early 1700s Giambatista Vico formulated his grand cyclical version of history, he based it on his anti-Cartesian view of human beings as not purely rational and as members of groups, not as isolated individuals. Since, as was already shown, Vico denied that the natural sciences could explain human phenomena, he set out to create a “new science” which could shed light on the developments in collective life. It turned into an investigation of the whole human past in terms of the life cycles of nations. All of these cycles followed one unvarying pattern, the storia eterna ideale, with three succestive stages: the eras of gods, of heroes, and of men. Vico cosidered that basic pattern to have been designed by Divine Providence.
