Spies in southern California caught the 2018 Mazda CX-5 testing in the wild this week, showing off some styling changes that will carry the compact CUV into the latter half of the decade.

Despite the extensive camouflage, we can make out some of the salient details of the updated CX-5's styling. For starters, we can see that it will adopt the CX-9's front-end look, including its thinner, more angular headlamps and less-pronounced foglamp recesses.

This theme continues through the profile, where the CX-5 adopts the CX-9's character lines--one running from the top of the front fender and fading into the rear wheel well; the other running from the middle of the rear door and forming the top of the tail lamp housings.

We can also see that the kink in the lower side cladding is gone; this is another CX-9 carry-over. The cladding sits lower and is thinner overall in the rear as well. This serves to increase the proportion of painted area, giving the car a more substantial look.

We expect the premium treatment will continue inside the new CX-5 as Mazda pushes its cars ever-so-slightly upmarket. We don't anticipate any significant powertrain changes, although this would be an excellent opportunity for Mazda to bring the CX-9's turbocharged SkyActiv engine to a smaller platform.
