Ready Minds serves an ethnicallydiverse clientele. Currently, 63%of Ready Minds clients thave beenCaucasian, 11% African-American, 9%Hispanic, 6% Asian, 4% Multiracial,and 1% American Indian (7% didn'treport ethnicity). The geographicand ethnic span of our populationindicatesthe need for Ready Minds careercounselors to be well trained in multiculturalissues. Consequently, in its hiringpractices, we attempt to locate careercounselors from diverse backgrounds inorder to best serve our clientele.
In order to understand some of thelifespan and developmental issuesfacing our clients, it is important toacknowledge their ages and educationlevels. Most of our clients are in theirlate teens or early twenties, howeverour client base rangesin age from 17-57. Over half of ourclients are intheir junior or senior year in college. Alittle over a quarter are freshmen orsophomores. Thirteen percent are ingraduate school or have a graduatedegree and five percent are in highschool.
As previously mentioned, we view careerdevelopment as a continuousprocess reflecting the stepsof self-assessment, exploration,decision-makingand self-marketing. Ready Minds asksclients to rank order these needs.Our population selected Exploration as thehighest career development need.The vast majority of our clients statedthat they needed assistance withobtaining information about different careerdirections that would matchtheir interests, skills and values. A closesecond included learning strategiesfor networking and informationinterviewing. This research suggests thatwhile we serve a large number of juniorsand seniors, these are individualswho continue to feel a need forassistance with the "nuts and bolts" ofexploring career fields. In fact, this isthe skill set in which most careercounselors feel they are uniquely qualified.
The college/graduate school majorsof our clients are as diverse asour clientele. Wehave clients majoring in everythingfrom health caremanagement to culinary arts.However, a few courses of study morehighlyrepresented include:Business/Finance/Marketing/Economics (31%),Communications/Visual/Performing Arts (17%),and Psychology/Counseling (13%). Knowledge of the most common coursesof study helpsus to effectivelytrain, supervise and hire Ready Minds career counselors.
