Oligosarcus hepsetus (O. hepsetus), known commonly asthe thin dogfish, belongs to the Characidae family. Itis carnivorous, with a diet basically composed of smallfish. It mainly lives in rivers and reservoirs, generally atthe middle to the bottom of the water column. It has aslightly rounded body with small fins and is considereda good swimmer[8]. Many articles have been publishedabout this species’ distribution, ecology, feeding habitsand diet, but no study has been published reporting themicroscopic analysis of the organs of the DT of O. hepsetus.Although it does not have economic importance, itis one of the most abundant species in the reservoirs ofRio de Janeiro[9] and the Paraíba do Sul River[10], with distributionin the coastal region of south to south-easternBrazil between Santa Catarina and Rio de Janeiro[11].Studies involving microscopic anatomy and histochemistryprovide information to characterize the organsof the digestive system, facilitating understanding of thephysiology of the DT and the feeding habits of the speciesunder investigation[12]. These studies are essential forefforts to restock native species to improve the conditionof ecosystems[13].The purpose of the present work was to describehistological and histochemical aspects of the DT of O.hepsetus and to investigate immunohistochemically theoccurrence of the endocrine cells secreting somatostatin(SOM), serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT), cholecystokinin(CCK), gastrin (GAS), glucagon (GLUC) andinsulin (INS) in the DT of this fish, seeking to relatethem to its feeding habits, in order to provide data forfuture studies.
