The high importance placed on personalqualities by the respondents inthis study may be due to the differingsocio-cultural environment thatthese women operate in. As Patel(1987) notes, the entry of womeninto the entrepreneurial world isonly a recent development in Indiadue to the orthodox, traditionalnature of Indian society. Hence,these women, who are the first tobreak out of socio-cultural constraints,must have felt that personalqualities are more important thanmanagerial or technical skills.ConclusionsThis study examined the problemsfaced by women in two states insouthern India in the starting andoperation of their business, theirreasons for starting in business,their reasons for succeeding, andthe work-family conflicts faced bythese women. While many studiesin western nations had examinedthe above issues in the context ofwomen entrepreneurs, very fewstudies had focused on womenfrom the developing world. Thisexploratory study indicates thatthere may be both similaritiesand differences between theexperiences of women from thedeveloping world and the developedworld. Specifically, this studyfound that the start-up problemsfaced by women in both casesmay be similar but there areimportant differences in otherareas.
