9.5 BIOLOGICAL VARIABILITY IN THE NORTH ATLANTIC
As we saw in Section 9.2.2, the physical properties of the North Atlantic climate
are dominated by the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). When the NAO is
strongly positive (Fig. 9.06a), the Icelandic low, centered between Iceland and
Greenland, is deeper and more persistent than normal. Cold Arctic air is drawn
southeast over Labrador and the westerly winds across the North Atlantic are
more to the south than normal. This brings warm, stormy, wet weather to western
Europe. During this phase, the Azores high tends to be higher than normal, bringing
stronger winds with increased upwelling to the northwest African coast.
