The violations of dominance observedin problem 3 do not disappear in thepresence of monetary incentives. A differentgroup of respondents who answereda modified version of problem 3,with real payoffs, produced a similar patteinof choices (11). Other authors havealso reported that violations of the rulesof rational choice, originally observed inhypothetical questioris, were not eliminatedby payoffs (12).We suspect that nlariy concu~rentd ecisionsin the real world are framed independently, and that the preference orderwould often be reversed if the decisionswere combined. The respondents inproblem 3 failed to combine options, althoughthe integration was relativelysimple and was encouraged by instructions(13). The complexity of practicalproblems of concurrent decisions, suchas portfolio selection, would preventpeople from integrating options withoutcomputational aids, even if they were inclinedto do so.
