Uncontrolled diabetes mellitus (DM) caused stress oxidative. Oxidative stress was a condition caused by inbalance free radicals and anti oxidant in the human body. Production free radicals increased lipid peroxidation that can produced malondialdehyd (MDA). Exogenous anti oxidant like vitamin C and E are needed to prevent the effects of free radicals on diabetic patients and diabetic complication. This study was aimed to investigate the effects of vitamin C and E supplementation on blood MDA and Cholesterol of alloxan induced-diabetes mellitus rabbits.
The experimental laboratory research conducted 12 rabbits weight of 300-400 gram and age between 2 - 3 months and later divided into 3 groups. The first group was the negative control, second group was the positive control (alloxan induced), third group was treated with vitamin C (7 mg/day) and vitamin E (4.2 IU/day) per oral for 15 days. Data were analyzed using One Way Anova with convidence of degree 99%.
Results showed mean MDA blood level in negative control group was 4.256 ± 0.423 μmol/ml, positive control group was 9.476 ± 0.469 μmol/ml, treated group was 7.327 ± 1.428 μmol/ml. Result showed significant differences in mean of MDA blood levels of rabbits between the 3 groups (p 0.01). From this study can be concluded that vitamin C and E supplementation has potential effect in MDA blood level and but not change to cholesterol blood alloxan induced-diabetes mellitus rabbits.
