If the two forms are considered separate species, the names listed below are
available. Measurements of key specimens are provided in Table 1.
Larger form: Tetragonula valdezi (Cockerell, 1918) or Tetragonula testaceitarsis
(Cameron, 1901). The holotype (labeled Type by Cockerell) and two paratypes
(labeled cotypes, one headless) of T. valdezi are in the National Museum of Natural
History, Washington. Tetragonula testaceitarsis is similar in size and most other
characteristics to T. valdezi. The type material (lectotype and two paralectotypes, see
below) of T. testaceitarsis differs from T. valdezi in the brownish black rather than
brown or testaceous tegulae, the blacker clypeus, and the blacker legs without a red
area on the inner side of the hind tibia. We therefore hesitate to consider the name
valdezi as a junior synonym of testaceitarsis; such action should await a
comprehensive study of the group, including male characteristics. Incidentally,
Sakagami (1978) consistently rendered this species name as testaceicornis Cameron
[not Melipona testaceicornis Lepeletier, 1836]. Subsequent usages of this erroneous
version are listed by Rasmussen (2008).
