genome-wide association study (GWAS) for milk fat globule (MFG) and casein micelle sizes.
An animal model was used to estimate variance components for 266 Holstein cows, considering
lactation, herd-test-date and days in milk as fixed effects, and an individual animal effect and
permanent environmental effect as random effects. Estimated breeding values and genotypes
from 496 animals, genotyped with Illumina Bovine SNP50 BeadChip and imputed to HD
(~777k) were used to carry out the GWAS analysis. The heritability estimates for MFG size
traits ranged from moderate to high (0.31 to 0.46). Estimated heritability was also high for casein
micelle size (0.47). The repeatability estimates for MFG size traits were low to moderate in
magnitude (0.36 to 0.64) and not estimated for casein micelle size. Genetic correlations estimates
were strong within MFG size traits (0.86 to 0.99) and weak between casein and MFG size traits
(0.10 to 0.28). No significant chromosome regions were found for these traits by GWAS
analysis. This work revealed that all traits have significant genetic variance which could
potentially be exploited to improve the functionality of milk for manufacturing products.
However, more samples are required to perform the GWAS analysis in order to discover
potential genes effecting MFG and casein micelle sizes.
