For Vygotsky, speech-for-oneself becomes internalized and moves from innerspeech to verbal thought. Also Vygotsky believed that mastery of the writtenlanguage, learning to read and write, had a profound effect upon the achieve-ment of abstract thinking. The constancy of the written language, grafted uponthe immediacy of the spoken language, enables a speaker to reflect uponmeanings and acquire a new level of control, a critical awareness of his or herown thought processes. Thus a final stage in this process of early language development is a level of command of the lexico-grammatical system in the target language(s) that allows a level of conscious awareness which gives entry to even greater avenues ofcommunication through reading and writing. This would normally take place around the age of five or six.In practice, of course, these stages are not so strictly delineated. There is ahigh degree of overlap, there is a constant progression and regression, not linear but spiral. This spiral movement works on both the linguistic and cognitive level. Thus, for example, the young child on entry into school would normally have attained a degree of language proficiency which also enables him or her to achieve a level of cognitive maturity. Vygotsky describes this growing maturity in the following way:
