Evidence from seabird populationsAn ICES working group on seabird ecology (Anonymous 1998) found significantcorrelations, in the 1950s to 1990s data, between the NAO index and breedingnumbers of seabirds on the German Wadden Sea coast. The species involvedwere fulmar Fulmarus glacialis, herring gull Larus argentatus, lesser black-backedgull Larus fuscus, common gull Larus canus, kittiwake Rissa tridactyla, blackheadedgull Larus ridibundus, Sandwich tern Sterna sandvicensis, guillemot Uria aalge, and razorbill Alca torda. In the light of evidence of increases in phytoplankton, zooplankton, benthos, and fish in the North Sea during the positive trend of theNAO, these results may not be surprising. However, the working group drewattention to another possible reason for the changes. During the 1960s there waswidespread decline of seabird populations in the Wadden Sea as a result ofcontamination with organochlorine pesticides and since that time there has beena slow recovery. More information is needed to distinguish effects of the NAOfrom effects of pollutants.
