BAB 10a couple of day latter, priss

BAB 10
a couple of day latter, prissy awoke with the uneasy feeling that something definitely was right.
It's unnaturally quiet, isn't it? she said, as she walked into the kitchen. there had been a welcome calm over the place ever since the shearers had moved on, but this was different. She took stock quickly. There was no fire burning on the stove and no welcome kettle singing to great hear. Mack was desperately trying to come the calm his son who was sniffling into his sleeve.
Can you do something with him? He said at on, ignoring Prissy’s question. He’s been a thorn in my side ever since he awoke this morning.
What’s wrong with him?
Lona’s gone, Robbie shrieked, jumping away from his father and pulling Prissy’s. Arm up and down as she tried to shush him. At his words she felt her heart jump.
For Pity’s sake, laddie, I have told you it wont be for long. It never is.
What do you mean it never is? Prissy said at once. Where has she gone.
Mack turned away from her and threw some sticks into the stove, coaxing the into life and placing the kettle firmly over it.
She’s gone walkabout with Davy, he said curtly. It happens from time to time as I've mentioned before. They go off into the bush, living the way their people did before the white mean and so say civilized them. They live off anything they can find, fruit and berries and any animals they can kill, and whenever they find them they’ll shin up the eucalyptus trees for the wild bees honey. It my last for three or four days, maybe more, but I guess not this time. They’ll not want to leave you in the lurch.
Me! What do you mean leave me in the lurch?
Mack spoke shortly. I’d have thought it was obvious. While Lona’s gone walkabout, you’ll would have to take over the running of the house. Make the goats, feed the chickens and bring in the eggs, collect the water from the creek, see to the cleaning washing.
Her mouth head dropped open at the list of essentials now she spluttered with anger.
I’m not employed to do all those things. I’m here as a house helper, but my duties mainly apply to caring for Robbie.
You’ll do whats required of you, lassie, Mack said grimly. And right now, we’re all needing breakfast.
And what if I refuse? She said hotly.
Then we’ll go hungry you, me and the boy the men will fend for themselves as usual.
She looked at him scornfully. Stop funning with me, Mack. You would not let your boy go hungry, and you can see to yourself well enough. I know that from the journey from sydney to here.
But I shan't be here all day. You know that Fred and myself are away to the supply depot with the fleeces. We will not be back until nightfall, so if you care for the bairn at all you will see to his needs and not make such a flounce about it.
She glared at him furiously. It was true that today he had planed to take the fleeces to White Junction. But surely if Aborigines had gone whereabouts would have waited another they, but apparently there was no knowing how long they’d be gone, and Mack would want to get his wool to Sydney while it was in prime condition to fetch the best price.
Are not you hungry that your chief stockmen chooses this time to leave you? She demanded, finding it amazing that Davy could do such a thing.
Mack shrugged. We have and understanding. As long as he’s always here at lambing time and for the shering, I make no demands on him when his past life claim him more than I do. What right does any man have to deny a man his ancestral birthright? We are the interlover in this country, not the like of Davy golightly.
Prissy was silent said by the simple logic and fairmindetness of the men, even if she privately thought it sounded completely daft. She wondered if all boses would be so tolerant. But is was enough to make her stop making any further retort. And she really had no choise but to do as Mack said.
Alright I will do the best I can but you’ll get back as soon as you can to night, won’t you? There will there’ll only be me and the boy in the home stead.
You need not led that trouble you, lassie. Hands the other mean will be in the bunghouse, and if you star getting when it gets dark, as one or two of them to jaw with you in the clearing outside the house. You need not feel lonely and I doubt that it will be much after soundown when fred and I get back. You’ll manage just fine.
He was more certain of her competence than prissy was. The unknown number of days without Iona strerched ahead, filled with doing all the tasks that had never been hers before, but which were allotted women’s tasks. Flora Mack wpuld have done them uncomplainingly as the wife of the homesteader, and as the thought came into her head prissy knew that she’d darned well do them to.
She was not so positive a couple of hours letter. By then, she’d seen Mack and Fred go off on the loaded wagon, after she’d produced a miserable looking breakfast of half-cooked porridge and bread and dripping. The men from the bunkhouse had gone about their business, and she and Robbie looked at one another.
Are we going to collect the water from the creek? The boy said.
I suppose we’d better do that first, prissy agreed reluctantly. The bush was always kept well cleared from the edges of the creek, and there was no real need to fear, but she still couldn’t forget the way that Flora Mackenzie had died there. She could never think of it without a shudde.
Come on then, and you can sit on the cans, prissy said, knowing she couldn’t dither all day, and that the sooner she got it over with, the better. The cart was ponydrawn and the metal cans all fitted with lids to prevent the precious water slopping on the ride back to the homestead.
It was not a long way to the creek, but the task of filling the cans and lifting them on to the cart, taking them back to the house and lifting them down again to put them in the cool of the larder was enough to make her arms ache appallingly. The sun was high and bakingly hot, suffusing the waving grasses of the bush in a shimmering dusty haze, and the day’s work had barely begun yet.
Iona keeps kettles on the stove all day, Robbie said importantly. Prissy groaned, because keeping a fire going was the last thing she wanted to do in heat, but it was essential for cooking and heating water.
I know! Prissy said. Except that, of course, she had not thought to keep the fire topped up with wood and there were only the faintest embers showing now. Foriously she encouraged it into life with the bellows, coughing and spluttering as black smuts flew about the room.
There’s something in my eye, robbie howled. It hurts, and it’s all your fault.
Stand still, you little ninny, and I’ll get it out. She instructed, while he squirmed and flinched and generally made a song and dance about the whole thing.
Robbie’s bad temper and her own to match it continued all day long. She hated having to milk the goats, to lean her head against their restless bodies and gingerly pinch their udders to squirt the thin stream of milk into a pail that one of them immetiately knocked over, to Robbie’s screaming delight.
She hated having to search in the dirt for the hens eggs, when the nasty squawking things moved threatningly near to her as she invanded their territory. She descovered she was hopeless at baking berad, turning out heavy lumps of dough in place of Iona’s shining cruty loaves.
She served up a meal for herself and robbie of halfcooked potatoes and sliced meat that the child said tasted awful, and he refused to eat it. By the end of the day she got him kicking and protesting to bed because he wanted to see his pa and his pa hadn’t come home yet, and when she sank down exhausted in Flora Mackenzie’s old rocking-chair in the parlour she looked up at her potrait with something like mutiny in her heart.
All right, so I’m no outback woman, she muttered to the silently mocking features of the other woman. I never professed to be, did I? I’ll never be any good out here, and I wish to blazes i’d never come! How does that please your ladyship?
I’m sure if my wife could answer back, she’d say you were not doing so badly for a town lass, mack’s dry voice said from the doorway.
Prissy’s heart jumped. She’d been so concerned with herself she had not heard the wagon retirn, and for mack to find her here like the lady of the manor after all she’d been through today, was just to much. She burst into noisy, angry tears.
I’m not doing well at all! I’m a total failure and you know it, so don’t patronise me!
She found herself wrapped in his arms and his hands were in her hair, smoothing it down from its unruly state. She hadn’t had any time to attend to her own toilet that day, and she felt a complete hoyden dirty and dishevelled.
Prissy, do you think I expected you to find today easy? I did not, but the fact that you have come through it unscathed is good enough for me. Tomorrow will be better, I promise you.
Tomorrow? She gave a watery smile, not wanting to remove her head from his chest, where it felft so good. She supposed that she should get him something to eat. It was what a good wife would do, or a good housekeeper but she was neither, and there only the remnants of a badly cooked meal and that leaden bread.
I’ve brought back some provisions from White Junction, Mackenzie said briskly, moving away from her sniffling body. Mrs. Hatherall insisted on sending a cake for us when she knew Iona had gone walkabout, and there’s fresh-baked loaf as well. I thought you be glad of it.

The boy mengatakan. Sakit, dan it's Anda kesalahan.
