EUR/USD: What To Expect If ECB Fails To Deliver? - BNPP

BNP Paribas economists expect the ECB to send a strong signal at today's meeting indicating that it will broaden asset purchases early next year in order to meet its balance sheet expansion objectives and that government securities will be part of this program.
"We expect the net direction of the EUR coming out of the meeting to be lower," BNPP projects.
"A failure of the ECB to go beyond last month’s message or to emphasize a need to see how existing measures play out would clearly be disappointing for markets and we would expect to see EURUSD squeeze back above 1.26 as inflation expectations continue to collapse," BNPP argues.
"However, even in this case, we suspect market participants would continue to anticipate further action in Q1, and EURUSD seems unlikely to get back above 1.27," BNPP adds.
Going into the meeting, BNPP remains short EUR/USD from 1.2520 targeting 1.18.
