KOLKATA

-------------

'You should have got admitted last month itself Ammijan. Itna late karengi toh problem hona hi hai. Thank god tumor didn't burst. Do you have any idea Ammijan how much dangerous it could have been? It could have been...' Jodha was going on with her scolding session until Hamida Banu interrupted. 'Jodha...Jodha...bas bhi karo...our kitna datogi? ab toh main ro dungi...haan.' A mild laugh at the end made its way through the receiver. But that was hardly enough to appease Jodha's much roused temper. More than anger it was fear that had occupied Jodha's mind...fear to loose her Ammijan...fear to loose the person she love. Even the idea of loosing her was like a torment to her soul. A glimpse of the possible outcome of such negligence sends shiver down her spine.

'Yeh mazak ki baat nehi hai Ammijan...ap janti hai apka mere paas hona, mere liye kya maine rakhta hai...you know I will be lost without you...I...' Jodha had many more things to utter but a sudden surge of emotion choked her voice. A lone tear silently found its way down her cheek. In spite of not being in her presence, this sting in her beloved's heart didn't escape Hamida Banu's senses. 'Jodha...don't cry baby. I am absolutely fine. Nothing will happen to me. It's just a small operation. I will need to stay in hospital for few weeks then everything will be just as before. As simple as that. Tum samajh rahi ho na?' asked Hamida with a caring voice.

'Yes Ammijan' Jodha nodded as she wiped the tear drop from her cheek. 'Ammijan aap aj hi admit ho rahi hai na?'

'Yes dear am on my way to hospital. Doctor said operation aj hi karna parega. We can't waste any more time. By the way beta I need to tell you something. Listen to me very carefully.' Here seriousness engulfed Hamida Banu's voice. I won't be available on phone, so if you need anything at all, you can call Adgah Sahab. I have briefed him everything. Paise bhi de dia hai. Ask for it if you need. You don't need to hesitate at all. And one more thing...Jalal abhi bhi Kolkata me hi hai. So be very careful. Don't come out of your hotel unnecessarily. Am I clear?' Hamida Banu halted for a confirmation.

'Yes Ammijan I got it. I will be very careful. You just don't worry.' Jodha tried to pacify her Ammijan.

'Our mere pote ka khayal rakhna. Ekdam durust rehna chahiye woh. Samjhi?' Hamida Banu uttered with a teary voice.

'Jee Ammijan. Khud se jyada aapke pote ka khayal rakhhungi...happy?' Jodha asked in a teasing tone.

'Take care of yourself too.' Now Jodha could sense the heaviness in her Ammijan's voice. 'I will', she assured.

'Thik hai ab rakhti hoon...operation ke baad jaise hi doctor permission de...I will call you. By beta', with this Hamida wrapped her call up. Call ended, leaving Jodha with some unspoken words she wanted to tell her Ammijan. She kept staring at the black screen of mobile...trying to locate some marks of the person she just talked to. Jodha wanted to tell her Ammijan something she never told anyone...rather...she never got chance to tell anyone...something she was feeling like saying today...'will miss you ma'.

Jodha griped the phone and took it to her heart...closed her eyes for some time...a deep sigh escaped her body. Jodha was trying to push aside the turmoil going on in her mind since morning. For some unknown reasons she was not feeling well today. A strange pressure was building inside her head...churning weird thoughts to kill the peace of her mind. Jodha's heart was reiterating to her since morning...something bad is going to happen...something that will land her in trouble. She didn't share it with Ammijan. How can she...knowing her condition!!! But this thing was bothering her like hell. Still there was no way she could get rid of it. Hence she decided to leave it on its own and coax her mind with some reasonable excuses. 'It may be just an imagination of my much stressed psyche.' With this Jodha brushed aside her dreadful thoughts. But things would have been much better if she didn't.

Few minutes later...

'Mom where are you?' Rico stormed into the room. Lil master was carrying a football in his hand. He was visibly upset. Rico was playing in the corridor but a wrong kick pushed the ball to the sharp edge of a Vase-holder. As a result its prickly edge pierced into the skin of the ball, leaking it eventually...so much to the annoyance of Rico. 'Mom where are you?' He yelled again this time Jodha came out of the washroom.

'Rico...why are you shouting like this? What happened?' asked Jodha in an annoyed tone.

'Mom look what happened...' he showed the ball to his mother. Jodha took the ball and rolled a quick glance on it but she didn't found anything wrong. 'What's wrong with it?' this question of his mother roused anger in lil boy. 'Mom can't you see...isme leak ho gaya hai.' Rico's words were wrapped in disappointment. Sensing his boy's mood, Jodha gave another look at the ball. This time she inspected it thoroughly. Finally she got the point!!! Ball was leaking at one part...in fact it has already lost its shape to some extent. 'Aapko toh kuch bhi nehi pata', uttered Rico with a pouty face. This innocent accusation of Rico amused Jodha. In a moment all her annoyance was swept away. She gave her boy a playful look. 'Kya kare Mom Rico ki tarah smart nehi hai na...isiliye' uttered Jodha faking a sad face. Now that made lil master all red. 'Mom!!!' a shy Rico hid his face in Jodha's belly. A broad smile appeared on her face.

'Oho...mera Spiderman sharmata bhi hai...' Jodha teased her son by pinching him on waist. The duo burst into giggles. Jodha came down on her knees and hugged Rico...'my baby'.

'Mom...don't call me baby!!! Am not a baby!!! Am a grown up man. And I need a new ball now.' Rico told his mom in a firm voice as he pulled out of the hug.

'Man-wan toh firbhi thik hai...but no new ball now. Balls hotel me nehi milte hai and we are not going outside.' Jodha gave her final words and walked up to the cupboard. But Rico was not the one who could be ruled over so easily.

'Mom yahan mere sath khelneko koyee bhi nehi hai...ab ek ball bhi nehi raha toh...' Rico halted his line here. The reason behind it could easily be sensed in his heavy tone. This moved Jodha. She can face anything but not her son's tears. Jodha rushed to her boy.

'Rico...Mom to mazak kar rahi thi...see main cupboard se paise nikal rahi thi.' Jodha tried to manaofy her lil master, without even realizing she just stepped on the trap laid by her own son. Immediately after Jodha's confession, the sad cover on Rico's face disappeared in a lightening speed. He chuckled, 'then let's go Mom.'

It took no time for Jodha to get hold of the real matter. She pulled his ear lightly and faking an angry tone uttered, 'Badmash!!! Ma se nautanki!!!' Rico giggled...so does his mother. Jodha rubbed her nose on Rico's cheek, making him giggle further.

Within a few minutes mother-son duo left for the shop to get a new football. Forgoing her Ammijan's warning Jodha stepped out of the hotel that too with her son. A decision she was going regret very soon.
