TRUST IN THE GROUP PROCESS
Rogers (1986b) made it clear that the person-centered approach rests on a basic
trust in human beings’ tendency to realize their full potential. Similarly,
person-centered therapy is based on a deep sense of trust in the group’s ability
to develop its own potential by moving in a constructive direction. For a group
to move forward, it must develop an accepting and trusting atmosphere in
which the members can show the aspects of themselves they usually conceal
and move into new behaviors. For example:
• Members move from playing roles to expressing themselves more directly.
• Members move from being relatively closed to experience to becoming
more open to outside reality.
• Members move from being out of contact with internal and subjective
experience to becoming aware of it.
• Members move from looking for answers outside of themselves to a
willingness to direct their own lives from within.
• Member move from lacking trust and being somewhat closed and fearful
in interpersonal relationships to being more open and expressive with
others.
Members begin to sense that by being in a group they are part of something
larger and are willing to participate in the larger process without giving
up their own sense of autonomy. O’Hara and Wood (1984, 2004) maintain that
groups only realize their full potential when individuals align their own inner
direction with the collective direction that is an emergent phenomenon of the
collective consciousness.
