The intense use of collaborative technologies is fundamentally changing the way
individuals and teams work in organizations. In this context, the task of leadership
is particularly challenging given that leadership processes cannot be based on
traditional forms of control, such as direct supervision, and on verbal and social
cues that promote desired behaviors and foster collaboration among team members.
Traditional leadership perspectives (e.g. trait theories, behavioral theories,
contingency theories, behavioral complexity theory, process theories, see [2] for a
review) were developed and tested mainly in co-located workplaces where indi-
viduals have many occasions to interact face-to-face. However, many authors
stress the incompleteness of these theories when they are moved into a distributed
environment, where team members need to make use of collaborative technologies
for most of their interactions and leadership is mostly conveyed through technology
(e.g. [5, 8]).
